Bench tests will tell you something but there's no substitute for it being on the boat and playing with gearing and props and testing in differing wind, wave and current conditions, not to mention considering hull and prop fouling. To my mind the best we can do is strike a balance. For me all I want is good efficiency around my cruise speed of all components. Short term higher speeds I'm not so concerned about. Yes, efficiency might be poor at low speeds but then again what I'm looking for is an average Wh/nautical mile consumption for the conditions I use my boat in. Others that live in hot climates will have different sums to do.

If you want a decent motor of this type then either a Lynch D135 or go to Saietta (ex Agni) where Cedric Lynch now works. Their 119R would be fine. http://www.saiettaengineering.com/motors/

All comes down to your cruise continuous power you need and for how long v peak power.
