Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Battery Bank Charging

Seems like most use bulk chargers when underway & need to use a generator to extend range. I had suspected my Dual Pro charging each battery in the string independently wasn't up to the task, Pat kind of confirmed this.

Thinking about it, makes sense to me. Only way I can verify it is to try it. That'll have to wait till next season:(

Just curious - what was the answer that you got (and verified?)?   Was it that the charger didn't like the batteries being under load while charging?

For those that have motoring down pat, do you charge in series with your generator & how's that worked out for you far as extending range without depleting the  battery bank?

I'll get in touch directly in a few days. I'm in the SF Bay area and my
ISP is really slow right now, probably infrastructure impact from the
fires, the archiving is going great, just really slow and tedious. I am
almost finished archiving a group that goes back to Jan 2000 and it took
14 hours to download approx 16,000 photos and 3 hours for about 1/3rd of
the messages. As soon as that group is finished I'll start archiving
Electric Boats.

Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Yahoo Groups

Kev/Tim/Jeff et al.
Re goups.io - Kev, I think the issues you note are an important consideration. The groups files currently take up about 2 GB, however depending how group activity progresses and with photo resolution (and therefore file sizes) ever increasing, I think the 10GB limit is a problem too.

Re: Archive - Tim, I've archived the group (didn't want to risk losing it if there wasn't a consensus here before yahoo started to delete) using https://github.com/IgnoredAmbience/yahoo-group-archiver and happy to say it works quite well. I've put the resulting files here: http://eb.ip8.org/archive/ temporarily if anyone wants to see what was saved. Email content, Photos, Files, etc all seem to be in good shape. Importing the resulting archive to another platform would take some work.... and I believe some of the data isn't archived because I'm not set as a moderator on the yahoo group. Myles, if you make me a moderator here, I should be able to figure out archiving the full data. And... apparently, for moderators, Yahoo has recently put together some sort of export tool, however I'm not sure what kind of data that tool produces.

Re: Next steps - Jeff, I'm happy to work on this with you and anyone else interested in moving to a new platform, I've been working with web applications & unix boxes for 20+ years. There's a lot of possible forum / mailing list platforms we can use, the first thing in my mind is to get an understanding of how the group uses the existing group features, and what additional features (if any) might be interesting for the next iteration. Main question has to do with how members access/reply to messages (email or web). To that end, I've put together a quick survey (should take literally a minute to fill out, just a couple questions) here: https://forms..gle/Y964aSyPqXfSJaf18 , everyone who's interested in this discussion, please take a minute to fill that out. I'll share back the results with the group after 24 hours or so.

In the meantime, I'm mindful that we're hitting thousands of email boxes with this thread. If there was a wish by other members/moderator, to move this to a regular email thread with everyone interested in working on it, please let me know. We could do that and report back to the group once a direction has become clear . On the other hand, due to the significant nature of the discussion, everyone might prefer to have the discussion continue on the full list. Either is fine with me.

Thanks. Roland

I've been the main moderator here now on the Yahoo Electric Boats forum for something like 14 years now…?

I understand the situation we face.

I have 3 forums at Yahoo, 2 of which I started and one (this one) that was handed over to me.

Yes, the Groups.IO option is a sweet one---I have long been a member of one group there that migrated from Yahoo years ago.  As I understand, the entire group contents can be migrated to Groups.IO, but only after paying a premium to do so----that was something like $125 but in the past week Groups.IO has supposedly bumped that up to $250 or so to transfer the data..

I am not inclined to pay that sum to migrate either of the 2 forums that I started.  This forum is different, has 10x the members of ElectricBoating on Yahoo and all that.  And yet, I don't see it a $250 value proposition for me to migrate even the data from this forum.

Jeff, since you started the new Electric Boats forum on Groups.IO, you could step up to that plate and make this happen (if I make you moderator of this forum).  Any thoughts on this?

I do not think I would have the time to run it in the long term, but I thought it was best to get it done for now so that it is an option for everyone if the Yahoo Groups becomes a problem after the transition.
