I don't know of any situation where Wine has been able to access USB, my understanding is that it just was never implemented or poorly implimented.
I am running Mint as my primary desktop, migrated over from Windows and find it does things very well except for a few Windows programs. In many situations I run XP in a VM, Virtualbox, but that has some USB difficulties as well. For many Windows programs I use Crossover under Mint and it works very well. Costs $50 and worth the cost. Mostly I use it for Microsoft Office (some things about OpenOffice I don't like) and for that it does just fine.__._,_.___
