I originally built a platform over the original engine stringers: GOING ELECTRIC PART 15: Securing the battery platform


It worked well but, getting to the one battery that was off set was awkward for ease of servicing. Last year I built an extension with angle iron for that battery and now have them in line for ease of servicing:

Yes, very good advice. I wish the steering wasn't in the way. Be nice to use the underneath of the cockpit for additional support. I will put up picks this weekend if the location I'm thinking of.

Bob,

I like the 3.5 knots for your boat, that motor and a 48v system. Here's what I know based on the information you gave me so far.

1.) That motor needs to make 3kw cont. for it to propel your boat 3.5 knots.
2.) In order for that motor to make 3kw's at 48v, it needs to spin 3,000 RPM.

What was the diameter of the prop you were planning to use?

Although the boat has a hull speed of 6.4 knots based upon some preliminary calcs I've run using prop equation, 10" pitch allowing for 50% slippage.
At 1200 prop shaft rpm- 5.6 knots
At 800 prop shaft rpm-3.7 knots....

Sorry to address you as Jon. Another thing to consider is that due to the very limited space between the motor sprocket and your mounting plate (only about 5/8" on my system), there is little room for a bushing, let alone a bearing and housing between the big sprocket and plate. My system runs great though with only the flanged bearing on the aft side of the plate.

Thanks for mentioning the flanged bearing issue Chris. If someone uses a flanged bearing or a couple of pillow blocks, you need two to keep everything running true.
If one only wanted to use a single bearing for thrust protection on a belt reduction system, a trailer hub that a wheel bolts up to would work pretty slick. They're pretty cheap, $35 or so. I believe you'd have to use a couple of shaft collars to keep the shaft in place.

Jon,I built my own
reduction system and finding the right bearing(s) and
incorporating them into your design is likely the most
challenging part of the project. You may be aware, I
wasn't, a 4 bolt flange bearing housing is designed for
a bearing with a spherical outer race. These are considered
self aligning as the bearing is allowed to align itself in
the housing to other bearings along the shaft. With just one
bearing, your system will not run true once you tension the
belt. These housings also allow the bearing to be rolled out
of the housing for replacement. You will need another
bearing, or maybe a bushing opposite of the main bearing if
you use a flanged bearing. I had the backside of my bearing
housing machined to accept a spacer ring that holds the
bearing from self aligning once it's installed on the
motor plate. This is the only bearing at the reduction plate
and I have a separate thrust bearing 3.5 feet aft with a CV
joint in between. 1.5:1 sounds pretty low, but I don't
know what voltage you are using. I believe you will need a
wider ratio than what your existing diesel has to allow the
motor to keep its RPM as high as possible at load to reduce
heat and increase efficiency. Make sure your design gives
you room to install a big enough lower sprocket without
having to use a tiny motor sprocket which is harder on your
motor bearings. What I'm saying is plan for the worst as
far as lower sprocket size. Happy to share more as
needed.

Yes I'm planning on gear reduction but will be
expermenting with the ratios. It's another part of the
reason for building my own mounting system, to make changing
the driven sheeve easy. I plan to start out at 1.5-1, bought
the clearview display in order to monitor motor/controller
temperature & will teak the ratio from there as
required. For thrust bearings, not sure yet but I've
been looking at 4 bolt composite flanged bearings. I want to
be sure the driven shaft portion of the assembly is
electrically isolated from the mount & drive. The
Thunderstuck gear reduction isn't a bad deal for the
money, I just wanted to do something different. It's a
personality flaw, never have stayed between lines :)

Of course this is calm water.

If I run at 1.5-1 ratio to hit the sweet spot, 40 amps+-, a 2-1 ratio would be 60 amps +-

it will be interesting to see what you come up with.

Thanks for mentioning the flanged bearing issue Chris. If someone uses a flanged bearing or a couple of pillow blocks, you need two to keep everything running true.
If one only wanted to use a single bearing for thrust protection on a belt reduction system, a trailer hub that a wheel bolts up to would work pretty slick. They're pretty cheap, $35 or so. I believe you'd have to use a couple of shaft collars to keep the shaft in place.

Jon,I built my own
reduction system and finding the right bearing(s) and
incorporating them into your design is likely the most
challenging part of the project. You may be aware, I
wasn't, a 4 bolt flange bearing housing is designed for
a bearing with a spherical outer race. These are considered
self aligning as the bearing is allowed to align itself in
the housing to other bearings along the shaft. With just one
bearing, your system will not run true once you tension the
belt. These housings also allow the bearing to be rolled out
of the housing for replacement. You will need another
bearing, or maybe a bushing opposite of the main bearing if
you use a flanged bearing. I had the backside of my bearing
housing machined to accept a spacer ring that holds the
bearing from self aligning once it's installed on the
motor plate. This is the only bearing at the reduction plate
and I have a separate thrust bearing 3.5 feet aft with a CV
joint in between. 1.5:1 sounds pretty low, but I don't
know what voltage you are using. I believe you will need a
wider ratio than what your existing diesel has to allow the
motor to keep its RPM as high as possible at load to reduce
heat and increase efficiency. Make sure your design gives
you room to install a big enough lower sprocket without
having to use a tiny motor sprocket which is harder on your
motor bearings. What I'm saying is plan for the worst as
far as lower sprocket size. Happy to share more as
needed.
