When I had a problem with my Torqeedo Cruise I dealt with the technical support team in the USA . Their email address is:

Seems it should not be a Torqueedo choice for me...

Re: [electricboats] PHEPB ?

I on Wednesday went to see a demo from FLUX Marine (https://www.fluxmarine.com) of one of their new outboards:

We tested to 40 hp
• very powerful
• very quiet (at full speed the water noise was louder than the motor)
• currently they are in the design/prototype stage so the covers look pretty clunky.
• plugs into 120 vac, about 6 hours to fully recharge

By Summer 2022, they plan to have approximately 50 motors produced for select pilot programs around the N.E.

My guess, a 70hp would work great on your Shetland 570.
• Peak Power: 115 HP
• Continuous Power:  70 HP
• Est. Range:  40 Mi (they would need to evaluate the Shetland 570 and design the battery for your needs)

It's a Shetland 570 (1990) with an ol' faithful Mercury 115 2-stroke, and it comes with a trailer.

But - I do not like the stinky and noisy "power of tower" of the 6 cyl. engine, when I don't need to use all the power of it.

Boat + engine is about 2300 lbs / 1 ton.
Any of you guys have experiences how to PHEPB such a craft with a dip-in electric engine ?

Another thought :
It is a light fun-boat, for daytrips on the local fjord, so it may even be planing with a big electric motor too ;-)
Just need a a chunk of LiFePO4's to power it, but then the Merc is out.

Best wishes,

Re: [electricboats] new member: looking for electric outboard recommendations

Hi, Roger,

I might be interested, but don't wait for me. I am waiting for the trailer to be reconfigured to the boat, so I can't take it anywhere yet.

The ePropulsion rep has promised to bring a motor to me to see if it will fit, after the boat shows. I am leaning toward a new motor but would consider a good used one.

What shaft length is your 1103? I may have issues with the lower unit clearing the trailer frame when landing. (The ePropulsion unit is available with an extra-short shaft, which I may need.)

How much use has it had? How much are you asking?

Do you attend the Mid-Atlantic Small Craft Festival in St Michaels? I will be there. Oct. 1-3.

Re: [electricboats] new member: looking for electric outboard recommendations

I have a Marshall Sanderling with an inboard electric, 18', about 2500#, with a 2500W, 48V motor. I find that she moves along well (3+ knots) in the range of 500 to 1200 Watts of thrust. I have a three blade propeller.  Buy a modest battery, add more or size up if you find you need more range. Everyone's needs are different.

My point is that the thrust you may need most of the time is lower than you'd expect due to the strong low end torque of electric motors.

A motor well, 15' - may I guess that you have Marsh/Peep Hen?

Two 50lb (12V ~50A) motors pushes my 30' Alberg nicely at a couple knots. Four or six gets her closer to hull speed of course, but battery life is a concern for me too.  I find Minn Kotas or Motor Guides on craigslist in/around Chicago for $75-150 all day in the fall and winter. One even came with a good charger and deep cycle battery for that price. An added bonus is if you shop around a bit you can always sell them for as much or even more than you paid if you buy in the fall and sell in the spring.

Also a factor to consider, especially with newer manufacturers, is reliability.  IDK the MTBF etc of all the different models naturally, but my brother (a former US Navy diesel mechanic) recommended 'don't be out on the water with only a single prime mover.'  And these are words of wisdom.  Multiple batteries, multiple motors, and you'll always have a plan B.

FYI: Minn Kota's recommendation is 2lbs of thrust for every 100lbs of boat.  The conversion is amps x volts = watts; 746 watts = 1hp

So, for instance, two 50lb motors (~100A @ 12V) = 1200W => 1.6hp

Also a consideration is that the electric motor's hp is almost entirely translated into actual thrust.  It's a mistake to compare internal combustion hp to electric hp.  Electric is significantly more efficient, all other things being equal.

I hope this helps.  Good luck!

I've got one of these. Another guy on this list has one and said it was still running a year later. I'm still building the boat so haven't tested it yet. It looks well built. While you're there check out the Under 5kW Guide as well.

https://plugboats.com/electric-outboards-less-than-5-kw/

I've used the Torqeedo 1003C and currently the ePropulsion Spirit 1.0 on my Com-Pac Picnic Cat. Both have fit my needs. And, both with remote throttles, avoiding an extra tiller.

This British dealer carries them both, and makes fair comparisons. There have been model changes in both lines in 2021.

https://nestawayboats.com/shop/epropulsion-spirit-plus-1kw-electric-outboard/

https://nestawayboats.com/shop/torqeedo-travel-1003s-1103cs/

You'll have to see what works in your well. The motor bulb and props on electric OBs are bulky, especially the Torqeedo 1103C.

Greg,  Most any 55 lb. trolling motor will do the job for you, especially if you are using it for maneuvering, etc.  If you might need to cruise 5+ miles regularly under power, then Torqueedo and similar motors might be a better option.

Re: [electricboats] Finally Starting The Build

Mine included buss bars, studs and nuts.  But the buss bars only fit with cells parallel not end to end.  And for my application (16P,  200 amps max) I thought they were a little light so I made my own from copper bar stock I got from Online Metals.

I also upgraded the studs to ones with a flatter bottom thinking I would get a wee bit better engagement of the threads.
I used these screws from McMaster Carr:
https://www.mcmaster.com/92605A134/

McMaster has these M6x20 set screws in brass which might be a better choice than SS?
https://www.mcmaster.com/93038A149/
And these brass nuts but they aren't serated flange type so you'd need lock washers?

Dongguan Lightning Energy Technology Co., Ltd. on Alibaba. I've made other purchases from Alibaba and trust them. I purchased 134 of the 280Ah LiFePO4 cells for $95 each including shipping and delivery to my door after negotiations. I worked with nikkie@lightning-power.cn and had no problems. I can honestly recommend them.

Re: [electricboats] Finally Starting The Build

Hey Randy,

I like what you are saying. I am planning to order 32 - 3.2v 280ah EVE 280ah's, or their equivalent, but there seems to be more than one option/location to choose from when searching Alibaba,or just searching. Can you say where you got them from? Thanks.
