Re: [Electric Boats] PCs and tools

Sinclair ZX81, circa 1982
Opus
Commodore 64
Sinclair QL
(Wrote a 3D CAD in BCPL. 13.000 lines of code, 1 year.)
Apricot 286
Apricot 386
Apricot 486 VX FT Server
Commodity PCs..

Now a custom WS made by a UK outfit, Win7 64 bit, Nvidia industrial
graphics, 2 x 32" displays @ 2560 x 1600 each
The displays are for 3D CAD (Rhino 3D, others), and used to design CNC
hardware.

I scratch built an industrial VMC, 1600x1000x400 mm work cube.
Bridge mill design, moving-table.
AC servos,
0.2 micron theoretical resolution.
ISO30 spindle and auto-toolchanger.
2300 kg in steel, just received near-last 240 kg yesterday.
Now undergoing V5. modifications.
Hope to get 25-35 N/um stiffness on latest big upgrade (over 1000 kg
more steel).

And a retrofit CNC lathe, 12x24", AC servos,
0.2 micron theoretical resolution.
3 axis, to be 5 axis.

No pics, sorry, $$ commercial reasons.
This may or may not change, depending on weather I will sell the CNC
tools or not, or just bits made with them.

Marine hatches, components, fittings, portlights and large CNC cut props
are one area.

The VMC has taken 15.000 work hours and 100k€ in actual-value stuff to
get where it is.
I also worked in the industry and had factory training from largest CNC
machine builder in the world.
Start for CNC was making boat parts, in 2003, so its been 14 years.

Grin;)
Gonna go make mountings for the spindle now, just resting.
40 mm thick tool steel bits are *heavy*.
Spindle cartridge holder is about 120 kg in 5 pieces, 20-30-40 mm thick
"F1 calibrado" machinable/weldable basic tool steel.
Hopefully get cartridge assy finished this weekend, and bridge-mounts
cleaned and primes.
