[Electric Boats] Re: Cordless Electric Paddle

Tested the electric paddle with the pirogue today. It was sort of awkward since it takes two hands to control it, so I had to sit all the way aft facing aft and look over my shoulder where I was going. way out of trim, about 2" of freeboard aft and the bow high and dry. I made about 3.5kts top speed. Noodled around for an hour and a half, about 1/3 the time at full throttle, and the battery never died on me. Doesn't get hot at half throttle or less. I think maybe a smaller prop would be a good thing. Drills are meant to turn kinda slowish, but this prop limits rpms quite a bit. The nice thing is, the drill already has a thrust bearing in it. I think top speed is around 300 RPM, just guessing, Seems like about 5 turns per second, yeah. I would like to have top speed about twice that, for better motor cooling at full power, I think. So Mk II will have a prop about 3/4 this size.

Two similar units could probably power a small dinghy, giving twin screw maneuverability. How cool would that be? Rudders, stuffing tubes, struts, a little more complexity yeah, but it would be really far out to be able to crab a dink around like a crewboat.
