Rob you make some good points. In the end it comes down to what people are experienced with and happy to accept. Also the way things are set up and how safe the installations are.
From the age of 12 I was brought up on a yacht. I'm a commercial Captain and have over 23 years of living and working on yachts. As a child we had gas onboard for both hot water and cooking. It was installed though with free falling trays so as any gas leakage would escape overboard and the gas line was solid from bottle to stove top. We were also in a Catamaran. There are many boats that use both LPG and Petrol I think you need to work things out for yourself.
There are a lot of old school mariners around that don't like change it really is up to how safe the set up is and most things can be done very safely these days you just need to incorporate it into the design.
As you said your retro fitting so this makes it very hard. I can see why you went with the Lombardini and would have chosen the same route myself. It's proven and will fit into the requirements you have to work with.
