Lower unit gears are built heavy, good thing as EV motors have way more torque, so probably balances out within reason.  It's possible to overthink this stuff.
 
Yes, just leave the shift rod accessible , and marked to read under duress --- mine is a lift / lower click thing.---------  Cal

Well, yes, might be good to be able to use the reverse gear to get home if it really did not hold up to running the forward gear backward. 

Mostly interested if anyone has done this successfully.
