Lots of good info, thanks to both posts. 

No, I do not have a thru hull shaft, just the outboard and have been leaning that way.  Also the boat is rather flat bottom and room under the cockpit is rather limited.  I would most likely do the conversion of an existing outboard rather than buying one.  The brushless conversion packages look attractive although for the way I use the boat (mostly slow speed) a brush motor probably would give good results.

One concern is the available gear reduction in an existing outboard.  I am more interested in low speed operation, docking and getting out of the harbor, so it seems that a gearing of 2.5:1 to 3:1 might work better.  Also sizing the prop might be an issue with an outboard.

Battery weight is the big one for this boat.  How well would it work to have a moderate battery bank and use a generator when longer distances would be traveled.   Does an ac gen set powering the battery charger work to supplement the system current?
