Other gear is reverse, maybe getting home takes  longer with less efficient power – or maybe if forward is out, fit a reverse prop and use it that way, different reverse gear ratio might even be better in some boats.

The answer is... you could but why fix in any gear??

If you keep the goods working, if the gear fails a simple slip into the other gear gets you home.
