Adding fins is probably an effective solution and something that could be made up easily to wrap around the motor, with either convective or fan cooling. We do this all the time with electronics to get rid of a lot of heat.
Thermal coupling between the motor and the heatsink is important. Silicone grease is common but not so good on irregular surfaces. However there are thermal pads, available from electronics suppliers, with a thickness 1/4" or more in good size sheets. Wrap the motor and clamp your finned heatsink over it.Thanks for everyone's comments. I don't really expect to have to go to elaborate cooling mechanisms, just considering possibilities as part of the design process before beginning the project. Trial runs with thermal monitoring will tell for sure.
