Re: [Electric Boats] Battery locations

Following up on the battery location discussions. I was looking at some AGM battery lit today and came across this info and thought those considering battery locations on the list might find it interesting:

• "Very safe at sea with no chlorine gas in bilge
(due to sulfuric acid and salt water mixing)"

Yep, a bilge full of chlorine gas could be a problem and something that would make me think twice about installing lead acid batteries in the bilge area.

Now as for AGM batteries the literature went on to say :

"• Operates in wet environments…even under 30 feet of water"

LOL. Don't know about your boat but, I think if your batteries are operating under thirty feet of water you've got bigger problems to worry about. <g> Of course every boat installation is different and has it's own issues. IMO when it comes batteries in the bilge just because you "can" does not mean you should unless you really have to.

As for my installation I found that the engine area provided the perfect spot for the 48 volt battery bank. It was high enough to keep the batteries dry. Plus it helped keep the trim of the boat the same and allowed for easy  access for maintenance (which has been minimal). Basically has been just wiping down the tops of the batteries once in while. You can see some of my battery installation here:
