Rob, Sorry for the delay getting back to you. You can put the batteries anywhere you want. The cable size is based on the longest run, probably the negative going from the controller back to the first battery in the string.

Firstly , I'be been crewing on "couta' boats , which are gaff/gunter rigged fishing boats , similar to the Grey Seal , and often with an old YSE12 or similar in them , along the "Shipwreck coast" of SW Victoria Australia.
Its aptly named , nearly claiming "Spirit of Mystery" recently , after sailing from the UK.
But having auxilery power with some grunt and sustainabilty is a big plus , when trying to punch through some of the blows that suddenly hit you.
The Couta boats have all upgraded , and on contacting the local dealer (who builds boats for these conditions) he recommended the 3YM20 , which develops 21hp at 3600.
I'm waiting on further advise from Hybrid Marine , but the Beta 25 they are developing I believe is a smaller electric motor , with a smaller power requirement , of course.
IF , I can get the system in to the Grey Seal without losing too much space to the batteries , then I'll never get caught short.
For normal sailing , then a small amount of electric power is all I need.
But if I've got to punch through strong head winds and big seas for 50 kms to get home , then I've got the power to do it.
One thing I want to ask though Denny , and that is locating batteries.
Is there any problem , if you have a distance between batteries ? , say in 2 of the batteries are 2-3 feet from the other 2 ?.
Assuming you use thick , heavy duty connections , is there any problem with that ?.

That's a beautiful boat you are getting. Oughtred is a great designer. Good luck with the survey.
I looked up the Hybrid Marine System - if it is the one in the UK, the one with the 13kw electric motor plus a diesel engine is much more power than a Grey Seal can use. It's got to cost a fortune, too, I bet more than you are paying for the boat.
It sounds like you do not expect too much speed or range - a perfect candidate for E motion! Maybe you don't need the diesel at all...
Using Oughtred's 3800# displacement figure and guessing an 18' waterline length, a 48v 100amp motor/controller with (4) 100ah 12v batteries would give a top speed of 6.0 mph for 3 miles; 50% power gives 4.8 mph for 5 miles and 25% power gives 3.8 mph for 9 miles. Weight including batteries would be around 300#, probably less than the diesel, starting battery & tank you are removing. You can use your existing shaft, stuffing box, cutlass bearing, etc and maybe even the prop. This would be cost about $2.5k if you did your own mechanical work and maybe $4k - $5k for a drop in unit like the solidnav or electric yacht systems products. Figure another $1k for good AGM batteries. Look at the power page of my website to see an example.

I'm shortly to take delivery (subject to a full survey) of an Iain Ourghtred Grey Seal , with an ancient Yanmar YSE 12 in it.
I reckon I can toss that , and put a Hybrid Marine system in , based on a Beta 25 diesel , and the Hybrid Marine setup.
My belief is that I will rarely need the diesel (but its nice to know its there) , and the electric power only long enough to get the sails up.
Its on a trailer , so I can take it home and recharge the batteries , or recharge with solar panels.
But the main thing is , quiet boating , and being able to have just enough power on to keep the boat pointing in to the wind for putting up sail , or lowering it.
That is ideal for electric , and not so good for diesel , that low revs running.
I can hardly wait !.
