RE: [Electric Boats] dumb question about a fan

Many AC motors won't generate electricity because they don't use magnets in their construction, so it's just motion. The opposing fields are generated by the operating electricity.
A DC motor is generally a permanent magnet type, so when the shaft turns it will generate electricity. Pull the blower motor out of an automotive style heater, and mount it in the box fan, and you should be able to generate power.

You -may- be able to rig a small battery to excite the field, or epoxy a couple small magnets to 'kick start' the system. That's a method used in some cases to convert battery ignition systems on motorcycles that have alternators to a batteryless system.
