Indeed - even figuring out if it's the controller vs the motor is a challenge, since both have integrated electronics. Analog doth have it's place...
OTOH - carrying a spare controller, and even a motor is not a bad idea in any case, and compared to the total cost of the system is not terribly exorbitant. And swapping them in is a short job. I have a lot of experience in this area :)
