Yeah Hannu, its the permanent magnet type brushless motors I am talking about. Basically using the regen capability of the motor and controller, except using an engine to turn the motor instead of a trailing prop. A small not too expensive diesel, maybe, such as the Beta 12. I know many hybrid systems are intended for charging the batteries with the diesel spinning the motor which is belt driven by the shaft. I figure coupling the electric motor directly to the engine with no belts would eliminate some mechanical losses, giving a fairly robust and hopefully efficient system. I personally have no plans to do this but my neighbor is kind of enthusiastic about such a setup. I think the potential dealbreaker is the performance of the controller. I am pretty sure that it would work automatically quite nicely for the bulk phase charging but might have to be manually regulated for the absorption phase.
