Re: [Electric Boats] Lithium - Re-purposed auto battery packs

I would use Tesla cells.

ALL high-energy-density systems, of high total power, are dangerous.
Gas, diesel, lead/acid, agm, lifepo4, propane, others.

Modern lion systems use bms electronics that monitor/control every cell.
They electronically cut off any cell with an error (Tesla and many other do this.)
They cost about 1 cents/cell, == 7$ for 7000 18650-C cells in a tesla.

You can buy lion batteries with integral mini electronic fuses, for the same cost as without.

ANY system with say 10-20 kWh power, or more, if short-circuited, will melt a hole in the boat and start a fire.
A tesla-type dictrobuted system of 5000-7000 cells is much safer than any gas/diesel/propane/lead-acid system..
because no single cell can cause damage, if a bms system exists, or the cells are fused electronically.
It does not have enough energy on it´s own to cause a runaway event.

Of course, in a dramatic/catastrophic collision, the lion batteries might be crushes/shorted, causing a high power electric discharge.
In similar cases, any gas/diesel boat would be more vulnerable, and cause a fire easier/faster, since a single tiny leak will set off a chain reaction.

I don´t know of any method to quickly let off diesel or gas in a fire - or to jettison large numbers of lion batteries.
Typically, high voltage 400V (Tesla et al) batteries use very good double shielded cables for the final runs.

These are extremely good, much better than any gas/diesel lines in any car or boat made today.

A good analogy is cars.
Based on stats, Tesla cars are about 100:1 less likely to catch fire than any gas/diesel car.
Iirc about 3 fires, over 3 billion miles driven, by 200.000 cars over 4-5 years.
About 1-2M fires/year, from 1 B cars, globally.
Us has == 170.000 / year.
== 100M cars in the US, 10% of global fleet.
==> 300 / year for teslas, if they had the same risks.
Total is 3 over 4-5 years.

Are you as consumers concerted about safety of re-purposed batteries auto batteries?

Are you aware of the safety issues of the non LiFePO4 batteries?

Is the driving issue of costs overcoming your concerns?

Thanks
