One of the reasons I like it is that if you look at the image there, you'll see a small spigot which then gets attached to a small diameter hose that goes above the waterline at all times. This is to bleed air. The old versions didn't have this and you physically needed to burp the face to face seal to let water in along the shaft and the air out when you launched the boat.

Anyhow, back to my point, when you dry build your system in the yard you can put a step up diameter hose onto the end of the small diameter hose to accept a conventional hose pipe quick connect. Then you simply connect to the yard/marina fresh water hose pipe with the tap turned on very gently, just enough to feed water down to the cutlass bearing without burping/forcing the seal.

This way I've been able to check and align my shaft and run my motor out of the water and keep the cutlass bearing lubricated, admittedly at no load, but I've certainly found it useful. The PSS is usually fitted to keep water out of the bilge and frictional losses down.
