Yes it was the simplicity of brushed DC and Cedric Lynch's history and the fact he's a Brit that appealed to me.
I'm with you on geared and packaged for your situation.
Cool is good. In fact taking it to extremes in the search for efficiency and best energy use one would cool the battery, the cables, the chargers, the controller, the motor and recycle that heat to make hot water for example. But of course it all comes down to money vs simplicity vs reliability.
So on my own boat with limited batteries I have say 4 hours cruise time at 1,000 Watts with a system that is around 80% effiecient from battery to shaft. So that's 4 hours of 200 Watts wasted heat. But I keep it simple and just boil two kettles with my bio-ethanol stove and mix in a pressurised water bottle with shower head ;)
