[Electric Boats] Re: Heinzmann PERM motors

Hi Peter,

(linkfest warning!)

Forgive me, I had assumed when discussing Greenstar you were referring to the Perm PMG 132, which is what they use. Yes and it is a copy of the Lynch/Agni/Saietta type motors. A brief timeline history here:

https://evmc2.wordpress.com/2015/06/15/the-lynch-motor-lynch-lemco-agni-perm-timeline/

Anyhow, you mentioned Perm and maybe you could look at their other motors since Heinzmann took them over. For example the PMS 156:

It looks to me from your boat spec that you are in Portugal. If so it's often cheaper to buy in Europe than the States. Other motor options might be:

Of course much depends on your budget and I don't know if you intend to DIY or purchase a system. Anyhow at the funny money end we have theDeep Blue 40i 1400:

I appreciate that shaft RPM doesn't suit your spec but the interesting thing with that system is the use of the BMW i3 battery which they offer witha 9 year warranty.

From your specs it seems to me that you'd need to run at higher voltage than 48V to get the shaft RPM you want. I can see by your specs you have had the sense to do a tow test so somewhere along the line you've likely come across Cedric Lynch's design of electric drives that he wrote in 1998. I keep a copy on the links page here:

http://www.elektra-yachts.co.uk/

Or indeed you might have read James Lambden's book. I note he keeps an early version here still:

But do yourself a favour if you've not got and buy his latest copy, which you can order from here:

It's worth paying the small amount for it as he's a nice guy and understands and documents the variables well, if indeed you intend to DIY. James builds well thought out bespoke systems as you probably know.

Motors aside, I note you intend to use Solbian and their controllers. My only comment there is - expensive. I suspect as you have a lovely large area on your boat (like James Sizemore on this list) you have looked at using the highest efficiency cells to maximise output for a given area. Solbian I believe use 22% efficient cells from Sunpower. Personally if you look at hard typical panels and calculate the panel area (as opposed to cell) you'll find more cost effective options. Typically with cells in the 16 to 18% range you'll be looking at panel area of 1 square metre per 160Wp panel.

Heads up here. I work part time blogging for Victron Energy, so I favour their MPPTs.

Batteries. I see you say AGM or Lithium. Of the AGM variety Victron's new Super Cycle is nice:

as are the TPPL types from Odyssey and Northstar. Looking at your boat and requirements I suspect serious money in batteries. Anyhow here's a blog I did some time ago on the merits of AGM vs LiFePO4:

https://www.victronenergy.com/blog/2015/03/30/batteries-lithium-ion-vs-agm/

Props. In your PDF I note you talk about maximising pitch for the aperture, yet diameter is first I think you mean. Maybe you can redo the down angle of the shaft too when fitting electric.

Also you speak of a small petrol genny. I use the little 1kVA Honda (900W cont) and next size up is 2kVA and that is 1,600W cont. As you speak of not being in the marina then I hope you get decent solar harvest and have to run a little petrol genny not so often. DC gennys will get expensive. I did a blog about Fischer Panda's one and integration with Victron stuff:

https://www.victronenergy.com/blog/2017/02/03/marine-alliance-with-fischer-panda-announced/

Here's a blog I did about my little genny and the Victron MultiPlus:

https://www.victronenergy.com/blog/2016/08/29/multiplus-magic-small-generator-big-power/

As regards your iphone etc charging, you'll note in that blog a dual socket next to my Color Control. I forget the make but plenty options here:

https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=marine+usb+charging+sockets

Anyhow, enough from me and I look forward to reading about your project. Nice boat by the way, just the kind of motor boat I'd want to convert.
