Yea there is a loss with any belt, any type of gearing period.
I was selecting exhaust fans for a project this morning & the belt losses were anywhere from 5-15% depending on the CFM of the fan.
Needless to direct drive fans were selected due to yearly operating costs, won by a landslide.
So 5% may not seem like a huge loss but if you had 50 fans in a facility, that's alot of money over the course of a year.
In our case, a couple % here, couple % there takes its toll on range unless you got a long extension cord.

one thing that really stands out to me is how many
footpounds of torque is required to properly seat the belt
on the drives. That has to have an effect on overall
