The flippant chap in me says the answer is because they have teeth ;) I guess it all comes down to what you want if you are referring to belt vs gearbox. Is it cost, efficiency, quiet, reliability, longevity, robustness you are looking for. Differing solutions subject to answers. I like Electroprop's approach to gearing be it helical or epicyclic.
