[Electric Boats] Re: Generator and battery charger

Hi Tom,

The reason I run the small genny and small MultiPlus is I can add to my generator or shore power (Power Assist) if I wish from my house batteries to create more AC than the rated generator or shore power output. That means I can run a smaller generator for short term higher loads, be that propulsion bank short term boost or boiling a kettle. Also of course this means I have AC without starting the genny. A silent reserve short term propulsion bank top too up if you like, and I can make a toasted sandwich as well 😏 Saves starting the genny if say depleted propulsion bank when coming into a quiet anchorage at night.

Had I wanted more power, if I had a bigger boat, we (I work for part time Victron) I could for Lithium charging, go up to 200 A @ 48V.

Of course many ways to skin a cat. If no house bank I'd probably use individual chargers for each battery along with battery balancers. Admittedly no system redundancy that way. Also for me it's a question of how my system has evolved, switching from AGM propulsion bank to Lithium. So now as I can charge Lithium at a higher C rate I have 2 chargers on the propulsion bank, which gives system redundancy and slow and faster charge options. In Scotland we often get free 4 hour visits to marinas so fast, free, quicker charging makes sense. Additionally I have added another charger to the house bank too. That takes the AGM charging to 0.2 C, the point where one needs temperature compensation. More system redundancy. Like I say I could charge higher and have a bigger genny in both cases or just one large bank if my boat space wasn't so small, but it's just the way money and the system has evolved.

You can see how little room I have and my attempt at an explanation here:

All scalable. For instance my pal's boat has an 18.4 kWh Lithium bank, and that's a house bank! Severe battery envy on my part...
