RE: [Electric Boats] Re: No Group Activity in over a week?

JB: What does it cost for the Valence batteries you’ll be using?

Mike: I’m also in the “hey, my e-boat just works and so I just use it” camp.  This weekend it was a 12-mile jaunt downstream on the Columbia River to St. Helens, Oregon, for their second annual pirate festival they were holding there….arrrrr.  Of course there were lots of folks curious about our wooden 26’ scow cruiser,  but when they found that it’s electric also, eyes lit up and the conversations often got quite involved, especially those with sailboats who had thought about ditching their gas/diesel plants…I usually refer them to the Yahoo group.  I suppose we could use a cleverly rafted information flier or a window sticker on my boat for such occasions that offers useful information, this site’s web link and a 2-d barcode for it.

Anyway, good fun with the pirates…ours was the only wooden boat there, sadly.

Oh, let’s see, for the 24-mile trip this weekend, this is about how it went:

Total Power used: 9.3kwh

5.7kwh (160ah) shore power used

3.6kwh (100ah --- 1hr @ 40a + 3hr @ 20a) generator power used (about ½ gallon of fuel)

                Economy: 0.39kwh/mile

Still running with 6 T105 batteries (36v total) purchased used a few years ago now at $20 each…demonstrated capacity of about 100-120ah at 40amps.

Hi Mike,

It's been too hot to work on getting a 50-year old engine coupling off the existing shaft, so I've been busy doing non-electric boat stuff (sanding, beer'ing, and so on)...

Otherwise, since we talked, I visited Valence Technology's headquarters in Austin, Texas, and picked up some of their original literature on the Lithium batteries that I will be using with the 100ibl Quitorque system I punched from Electric Yachts of Southern California. Also found out that these are their first generation batteries. They are now producing their 3rd Gen. So, the most I've done to warrant mention in this group is that I've updated Sine Metu's eDrive post with this information and scanned a couple of documents into it as well: http://sailingsinemetu.com/2012/01/31/sailing-sine-metu-edrive/

I hope everyone is enjoying a great Labor Day weekend out on the water!

Ciao!
