Re: [Electric Boats] Introduction

Bill,

Great to hear back!  I used to sail on Lake Lewisville (it was close to the house, though a very small lake).  Would love to sail regularly on Lake Texoma - plenty of water, nice places to anchor.

While a smallish electric solution is sufficient for my case - I can't go that far; you might want to consider something a little beefier if you're in the Keys.   The common advice that I got from Electric Yacht and others was to step up one notch on the motors from the lower end systems (8.5kW).  Buy a little more motor than you need, then you'll have the buffer if it is necessary.  You can always get a little more power out of the batteries for a short burst - at least more than you need to regularly push the boat with.

As for batteries, that's where you may need to think seriously about the capacity.  An impression I've gotten from the group so far is that the Golf Cart (GC) battery solution generally provides plenty of power for quite a bit of cruising.  I tend to be a bit on the paranoid side.  I would probably plan 2 sets of batteries so that I've always got a backup if I do somehow run my first set out of capacity.  But that's just me, and I really don't have much experience in this real (yet).

Good luck!

Hi John,
My boat came from an inland lake in Texas - bought it on Grapevine, and sailed on Ray Roberts and Lake Lewisville before moving to the Florida Keys. It is a TMI 30 (Texas Marine International).

My use here is a lot like what you describe, but eventually we'll be cruising Bahamas or Carib, so I'm trying to make sure whatever I install will work for that, too.

Thanks for your comments on different manufacturers. That's just the kind of thing I want to learn from this group!

Bill
