RE: [Electric Boats] Cruising with EP

I am in the process of converting our sailboat to electric aux.power..We cruised full time for over 2 years and here is what we found worked for us for the house batteries..
We have a 400 watt air ex wind turbine..Going thru the canal system from lake Ont. to the Hudson river the output from it was close to zero due to a lot of protected areas..
To shorten this the only time we were able to supply all our house needs with the turbine was in the Bahamas and in the Caribbean islands..
After we added 65 watts of solar and changed our nav lights and anchor light to LED we were able to cover our house needs at all times except when we needed to run the radar..
We do not have refrigeration and this would change everything..
The best we ever saw from the solar was about 3.5 amps and most of the time it was in the range of 2.5 amps so that is in the same range as Mike and Myles were saying..
The wind turbine on a sailboat is of more use at anchor than underway..That 400 watts needed about 25 knots of wind, most of the time the output is below 100 watts..Bear in mind that you will be looking for sheltered spots to anchor for  comfort reasons..
That being said we will be going to 160 watts of solar which i expect will carry our house loads but since we will be off full time cruising again we will be carrying a Honda 2000i to extend motor run time when needed..

Check out this site for what can be done if you have never seen it but I think they had a large budget..http://www.transatlantic21.org/
