The CFR (Code of Federal Regulations) covering commercial vessels with low voltage systems (50 volts or less) also indicates this. My experience over more than 30 years of implementing or repairing marine electrical systems that otherwise were designed correctly, is the failures have 99% been with terminations that were crimped only!

Sailonner, that is not exactly correct. Terminations attached with soldered joints alone are not allowed in the Standard. Terminations that are soldered, must also be crimped. So a correct statement would be: "The ABYC allows wiring terminations to be both crimped and soldered." The applicable ABYC Standard specifically states:
"E-11.14.5.7 Solder shall not be the sole means of mechanical connection in any circuit. If soldered, the connection shall be so located or supported as to minimize flexing of the conductor where the solder changes the flexible conductor into a solid conductor."
and;
"11.14.5.8 Solderless crimp on connectors shall be attached with the type of crimping tools designed for the connector used, and that will produce a connection meeting the requirements of E-11.14.5.3."
Crimped terminations fail generally because of two causes: operator error or the crimping equipment was not correct. A crimp by a knowledgeable operator using the correct crimper matched with the correct termination onto Type 3 Boat Cable will created a cold formed joint that,in most cases, is gas tight.
