Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Batteries and Powering Them

I started with a Zivan NG-1 for my 48 volt bank. The nice thing about the Zivan is that it can be programed for various battery types by changing a plug in card. So if you change to AGM batteries in the future that's all that you would need to change. I also added a Dual Pro charger last year that charges each battery indvidually. Both chargers have pluses and minuses. The Zivan bulk charges very well and can also move the boat along at about 3 knots if I' don't use it for charging. After bulk charging with the Zivan  I usually then switch to the Dual Pro to finish to have a balanced battery bank. Though I do use solar/wind a lot to finish too. I find the Dual Pro takes a long time to charge the bank alone. This is not a problem if you are always at a dock and grid connected.  But, since I'm on a mooring or at anchor most of the time I don't like to run the generator anymore than I have too.

Thanks for all the information, folks.

Jim, I have a 1975 CAL 2-29. I've purchased an Electric Yacht 180ibl. I took the old Westebeke out when it died last year. I explained to the marina last year that I was eventually going to replace the onboard, so the plug and patch they put in place of the prop should be easily removed. But it's still a cost.

The generator does sound like a good idea. As for the solar panels, I envisioned building a removable platform off the transom, if the size wasn't outrageous. Otherwise, there's plenty of foredeck if I don't have to be worried about them being stepped on.

If I do just get two more deep-cycles for now, will I need a different charger once I go for something better? What would you recommend in terms of a charger?

Anne
