[Electric Boats] Re: Electric motor conversion

James,

Perhaps I mis-spoke, for any one day transit of more than about 25 miles, they also use their diesel. They use their diesel when their previous day's motoring has left their main bank depleted or whenever the weather has reduced their solar collection. The diesel is also used when they need more than 3kts (3.5mph) for more than a few minutes. Their house batteries are charged with the diesel whenever they can't get shore power, they aren't set up to use solar or the drive bank to refresh their house bank.

They have covered a large portion of their journey on electric power, but they have used their diesel for much more than just a few open ocean crossings.

Fair winds,

Each boat requires a given amount of power to reach and sustain a given speed. So, how much horsepower does the 40' houseboat use today?
