Mike used a 48v Prestolite forklift/pump motor as an outboard
powerhead. Prestolites are popular for this activity because they're
so reliable and tough. Though factory rated at 48v we can run them at
144v without meltdowns. Similarly we run a Prestolite 12v pallet-jack
motor in the 48v classes.

The two major changes in this set-up were an 80 pound Lithium-Polymer
pack in place of the 500 pound lead/acid set, and a step-up gearbox
to turn slower motor rpm into the 8,000+ rpm modern props are
happiest with. In addition to much less weight the LP pack's increase
in density allowed full lake-length runs with enough reserve for back-
up and balk recovery.
