On the laptop batteries - I've seen the same thing. But observing behavior in my 5-laptop household, I can tell you the reason. Everyone leaves them plugged in, sitting on the blankets while they type/read in bed (we are a lazy bunch). They get HOT because the fans are blocked. That is the quickest way to kill a lithium battery - charging at high temp.
My IBM T41 has the battery hanging off the back. So while I am guilty of the same - it's battery still lasts forever because no matter how hot the laptop gets - the battery stays cool. Laptops should have a BMS which disables charging when they are hot - it's a crime that they don't. The site mentioned in the last post gives a 2yr warranty if you buy their BMS.
Still I think your skepticism is warranted. But look back a few months even - lithium has dropped by over 50% in about the last year and I expect that to continue for a while as volumes ramp up.
With the revised pricing posted earlier, 200AH @48V is only $3K plus BMS and chargers. If they only get 1000 cycles it will still be pretty competitive.
