I think a 5kw system will move the boat just fine. The important decision to make is the battery pack. As a point of comparison, I have a Beneteau First30 with a 5kw system from PropulsionMarine. My 100ah 48v lithium bank gives me 1.5 hours at 5kts, 3 hours at 4kts and about 6 hours at 3 kts.
I have a 2.55:1 gear reduction turning a 12" diameter 14" pitch 3-blade propeller.
