Right you are. For a casual party boat sort of application, electric drive with shore power charging makes a lot of sense. at an average of 12 cents per kw/hr, shoreside electricity is WAY cheaper than gas or diesel. A small boat can be converted for a third the cost of a small diesel installation. When range and speed are not an issue, why trouble yourself with that stinky bellowing clankasaurus infernal combustion diesel? It is clean, economical, low maintenance, and dependable. Instant power. No minimum idle speed, so easy to maneuver dockside even a single screw with no thrusters. I would like to see someone power a pontoon type party barge with a pair of 5kw motors. I think it would be a perfect match, especially with a full solar canopy.
