Re: [Electric Boats] Re: sun power

We run directly off the solar panel input almost  exclusively  The batteries do buffer the system but I monitor the solar input and set the motor speed so it draws just a little bit less. That way my batteries are fully charged at the end of a day of cruising. With 5000W I can generate over a 100amps at 48V. The boat runs about 4 mph at 75 amps and not much faster at 100amps so we usually set the motor speed at about 60-80amps and can pretty much run all day like that by tracking the sun with a simple but effective tracking mechanism I call the flap tracker.

It's a little slower than the diesel but we're usually not in a hurry. The system has carried us over 2000 miles so far and still going strong.

Having a big boat and a system based on 144V I don't count on my 2-260W panels to add to the Propulsion Bank (PB) however they take care of all my onboard needs now unlike before when I was drawing down the PB to charge the House Bank (HB)(144V to 12V converter). That adds miles to the PB never the less. I've seen an increase of about an hour running at 5 knots not taking away from the PB. The Solar handles Nav, Frig, Freezer, lights and most important the Stereo. Last season I never drew down the HB more than 50% but on a sunny day and out cruising they were always happy. Than add in the regen from the props (under sail) I could put back in around 600W average to the PB. I figure a fully charged PB on a 20 Hour sail at 10 knots average (open water). This was proven 7 years ago by a delivery captain when he brought the boat back from the Carib to the Chesapeak Bay for the previous owner. They ended up running the A/C off the 144V DC to 120V AC converter to draw down the nearly overcharged conditions.
