Re: [Electric Boats] Re: Overheating Motor Controller

+1.
As I have commented in the past, better tech makes for lower losses.

My circa 1950 Bp 3-phase motor is 18 kg mass, and 1/2 Hp output.
Excellent, near silent.
My 2014 china Ac servo is 2.5 kW, 15 kg.
Excellent, near silent.

800% difference.
The Bp is low-temp and thus long-lived because it has a lot of mass and
area to dissipate heat.
The new servo is low temp and long lived because it is very, very efficient.

At 8x the power density, it does not get hot at all.
The servo controller sometimes uses the integral fan, in hot temps (30C+).

The more heat sinking you need/use, the more losses you have.
Heat is a loss.
Noise is a loss.
