Apples and oranges, I know, but my Alltrax Axe4836 brush motor controller (purchased late in 2003? From Thunderstruck, BTW) is still ticking right along after 13 years…I use a finned heat sink with muffin fan attached.  If your controller is in an enclosed case (as mine is---outboard motor cowling), be sure you're venting the air out of that area sufficiently---doesn't help to blow air on the heat sink only to have it recirculate back.

yes, we have seen this a lot, folks need to use a proper heat sink on all controllers.
