Well, I guess you can't blame folks for trying to make a buck. Selling a complete kit is usually more profitable, I imagine, than selling a few parts, and tech support questions would be easier to answer, and customer satisfaction, especially for a first time DIYer, would on average be higher.
I hear you on the Chinese tech support. I use Kelly controllers and things can be pretty weird sometimes. I think Fany at Kelly does try to be helpful, but they are really stubborn about a few things. Like not releasing the source code or compiling the configuration program for Linux. It is a PITA to borrow a WinDOH!s laptop every time I want to tweak the controller a bit. Doesn't work in Wine because the USB support is so dodgy. Well, basically non existent. However, after a LOT of initial skepticism, it seems that folks are starting to accept the Golden motors as being not too bad after all. I have had decent experience with my Motenergy motors though, in roughly the same price range, and they have a wide user base, so peer support is available, should it be needed. Really though, if the hall sensors and the phase cables are hooked up correctly, all these BLDC motors pretty much just work. I find that the water cooling option in the Golden motors is pretty interesting. I have my doubts about the safety, just on principle, and it would be dissappointing to discover that liquid cooling is needed in the first place. I guess it would be a help if you are one of those guys who like to push a motor hard, but heat dissapation is just one problem with pushing a motor. Oversaturation reduces efficiency, too. I imagine it reduces magnet lifespan, as well.
I have generally heard support from Thunderstruck was okay. I considered going with their kit but decided I could roll my own cheaper. Weighing the pros and cons of belt vs gear drive, I finally decided to go with an enclosed gearbox, too.
Not to go off topic, but since you mentioned how sucky WinDOHs is getting, you might want to try Ubuntu for a few months. When W8 came out I said "ENOUGH", and switched completely, finally, and forever. The advantages are just too numerous to list. The disadvantages are few, like can't run things very well or at all if they use VB plugins, or the lack of USB support in Wine when you have no option other than a WinDOHs app.
Thanks for sharing your experiences, Dan. I have been thinking about trying a brushed motor, and now I got a couple more places to get stuff.
