What they said. And what you said. If you are running at higher power levels, you should have a heat sink of some kind. An ordinary finned aluminum heat sink will work fine if you have good ventilation past it. A muffin fan is a very small electrical load and will help further. A nice big blower hitting both the controller case and the heat sink would be even better. My "heat sink" is just an aluminum plate but I usually run at 15a or less, and my ER is fairly open and well ventilated. I have never had my Kelly controllers shut down on overtemp and I have occasionally ran at full power for several minutes at a time. YMMV. The Sevcon units look more compact and so they are probably a little more dependent on heat sink / cooling. Plus the Kelly units I have used have shallow cooling fins on the case.
