Which kind of boat do you have, where are you located (approximately), and how do you want to use the boat?
 
I've done some looking around too, thinking about re-powering my Catalina 30.  I'm on an inland lake in Texas.  So I don't have to deal with currents or large waves.  Typical usage for me is probably high power for the first 1-2 min. to get out of the slip, then low power for the next 15 min or so to get out of the marina and sails up, and reverse that coming in.  Or...  if motoring, maybe running at relatively moderate speed for no more than an hour or two.
 
Thunderstuck seems like a very good company to work with.
From what I can tell, the primary difference between their setup and the drop-in units that Electric Yacht and Propulsion Marine provide is "how much work do you want to do?".
 
If you have to replace stringers anyway, and if you're a "hands on" kind of guy, then the kit from Thunderstruck will save you some money.
 
If you're not wanting to spend the time machining the brackets to hold the motor, etc...   Then a drop in kit from either of the other two will be much simpler to deal with, but cost more.

Hi, I'm new to the group. I recently decided to re-power my 30-foot monohull sailboat with an electric motor, so I'm here looking for advice and experience.

My initial research turned up Sailboat Kits from Thunderstruck Motors, both 8.5 and 10.5 KW, both 48-volt systems, each under $2,000 (minus the batts). Has anyone used these?

I started thinking and engine compartment projects because I need to replace rotten stringers that hold the engine mounts for my current diesel. Will switching to electric mean a different approach to stringers?
