Re: [Electric Boats] interesting project

We are nowhere near "there".

Electric range is nowhere near the range of liquid fuels, assuming $$ is considered even in passing. Only 10 gallons of diesel in a 40' catamaran will take you nearly 100 miles…

Energy density for batteries is still *way* below that of liquid fuels. energy density is directly related to how far you can go on what you can carry.

One the plus side, however, if you run out of diesel in the middle of nowhere, you are pretty well hosed. But if your batteries go flat, and you have solar or wind, you can refill yourself.

Can you imagine a cigarette boat going electric?
It would need a ton of batteries to drive the motor, and then a SECOND ton of batteries for the sound system to provide the artificial NOISE factor!!!   :)

As for wake boats - I guess it would be politically incorrect and dangerous to suggest that boats designed with the express INTENT of making the biggest possible wake should be sunk with extreme prejudice.  However...

Just sayin...

Cars and trucks yes and maybe ski boats and wake boarding.  I would sure love to see those noisy buggers go electric. :-)

Do we really need a new battery technology?

Or are we already there?

Of all the boats I have ever converted to electric propulsion, I have never once had a customer call and say they had a range issue.

High efficiency systems with good batteries with Battery Management are already performing beyond our needs.

The truth is that sailboats are primarily used for daysailing or short trips, all within the capabilities of a Lead Acid Batteries, with Pure Lead batteries performing the best.

Electric Motor Sailing range often exceeds the range of a gas or diesel sailboat.

The key is managing the batteries properly so they don't lose their capacity over time.

We have many boats that have over 10 years from their AGM battery banks, simply because we balance the batteries.    don't worry about waiting for new technology, use the technology that already exists and install to the highest standards and you will get between 10 and 15 years of use from them.

If you want more range, add solar or a generator.

The fact is that higher energy density is also accompanied by a more volatile chemistry, which is undesirable on a boat.

For the vast majority of all sailors, batteries for electric propulsion are already there.

The advancement will come when the boat builders start building from the ground up as electric.   When this happens you will see more range and more performance from Electric Sailboats.

The dreamer side of my brain sounds wonderful, but my practical side tells me that I would like to see more data to back it up. I love it though.
