Thanks for that, John. The convenience of an LED warning light vs feeling the battery or shooting it with an IR thermometer is worth the modest price you mention. Can you point to an actual schematic for this? I am thinking a piezo buzzer would be nice, too. Sounds like a homebrew project I could manage to do.
I was thinking the same thing, about parallel strings vs a series of paralleled batteries. It does seem like the low difference in voltage would have a greater effect on current with parallel batteries in series than two series strings in parallel, since the paralleled voltages are higher and the difference is a smaller proportion of the total. I still prefer to simply avoid any parallel installation whatsoever, but I think the information would be useful to somebody somewhere.
