2kw is not much power. For a cat the size you indicate, I would think you would want at least twice that. 5kw bldc motors are common and cheap. I would go with a pair of them. Separate banks, separate controllers. What size and pitch props? Straight inboard drive? Outboard? Lot of variables. I would strongly consider lithium batteries yeah. You don't HAVE to charge them to 100%. If the price of batteries and BMS (don't even consider Li batteries without a dependable BMS) is too high there are other chemistries that will work just fine. I love my golf cart batteries, myself but pure lead, AGM, and other types have plenty of fans and proven track records.
