Electrically, there is no reason why you can't use golf cart batteries. You may find that 6 of them in ,series is sufficient. Or you could parallel two series strings like the setup you have already. My boat has 8 golf cart batteries in series, as well as a pair in series for 12v service. Golf cart batteries are not suitable for high performance applications, but they are cheap and durable. I am quite satisfied with mine. Keep the electrolyte level where it needs to be, and only add distilled water, and charge them properly and never discharge them below 50% and they will give you your moneys worth.
Before making such a change, make sure they will fit in the space available.
You can use the same multibank 12v charger, just connect each pair of leads to a series pair of 6v batteries. I use a 4 bank 12v charger in similar fashion to charge my 48v bank of golf cart batteries.
