[Electric Boats] Re: Running an electric motor connected to the old Gasoline engine?

If you were only going to use the electric motor (not an engine) to power the boat for short distances like docking and trailering, then sure, it would work. But, you'd want some sort of unloader so that your motor wasn't also having to compress air each stroke. And, you'd want some way to turn off the fuel so you aren't pumping gas into the environment. Very complicated and an electric outboard or troller motor would be much simpler.

A better solution for an integrated approach would be to install a quick disengage clutch between the engine and prop shaft and then use the motor to spin the prop, but not the engine. That way you wouldn't need to modify the engine.

To start the engine with the motor engage the clutch first. When the engine starts the motor could be used to charge batteries, but this depends on your motor and electronic setup.

What I was interested in doing is replacing this starter with a Mars Brushless electric motor. This would allow me to use it to start the gas engine or leave the ingination off and drive the boat via DC power alone.
