[Electric Boats] Performance Numbers

My 5 KW Propulsion Marine unit is now installed in Kapowai, a Catalina 30. Photos are posted on the group site.

The motor draws 25 watts in idle mode and starts the propellor turning at 50 rpm at 50 watts. The electric drive consumes 1500 watts at 3 knots and 4 KW at 5.2 knots.

We are now entering into the optimization stage of installing the drive. We will be monitoring DC current and voltage, AC current and voltage, motor rpm, propellor rpm and temperature of all components. We can change the motor windings, the gear ratio, and the propellor to create the most efficient system for the boat. Efficiency is so important because higher efficiency means longer range.

Stay tuned for more updates.
