I was not advocating the use of a jet, the AMC project vessel uses one for
reasons other than efficiency.

If you already know the desired ratio, and can get a suitable reduction
gearbox, then that would likely be the best/simplest option. Since you're
asking the "what?" question, I assume that you've drawn a blank at getting
a reduction box.

If you can't find a reduction gearbox, there really isn't that much in
setting up a couple of toothed pulleys and a belt.

The hardest bit is prepping everything to stop the rust, as most of these
bits and pieces are not designed to be corrosion resistant.
