If you are considering using a ICE generator in adverse conditions, then you should look at a permanently installed DC generator in your boat. Of course, this will be the same volume and weight of a regular diesel drive system in addition to whatever electric drive and battery bank that you are considering.
If you're thinking about long offshore passages under power, a diesel inboard or a gas powered outboard is much simpler, cheaper, lighter and efficient than any electric drive available today.
You need to pick the right tool for the job.
