Re: [Electric Boats] Westsail 32 conversion.

personally, i think that an ME0913 would work just fine on a Westsail 32 and recall when those boats were all the rage as potentially the ultimate world cruiser....   electrics are so much different than  ICEs that it is sometimes difficult to understand the ramifications with an electric....  the place where an electric COULD possibly get in trouble is when too much current is applied due to the resistance of the load being so great as to cause too great a temperature build up....  certainly too great a displacement and the thoughtless slamming of the "throttle" to full forward could cause a problem....  but actually it is the resistance of the hull that is more important in my mind IF one is willing to understand the dynamics of an e motor and NOT simply go slamming the throttle around without regard to the load being placed on the motor....  e motors have the advantage of providing VERY good acceleration but it one would be content with the acceleration of the more normally utilized ICEs then a motor such as the ME0913 will stand up to about anything....  the hull shape and speed of the Westsail can certainly be handled by an ME0913 if it is used correctly....

i have recently been looking at the Alten Duke 4850 and 48100 dc gensets which i have come to believe are very well engineered both by spec and reputation....  using one of these gensets in conjunction with an ME0913 would give your Westsail a great range.....  the 4850 can run at 48v 50amps for about 4 days on 20 gallons of diesel so that it you only got 5 knots out of it your range would be about 1200nm....  i'm pretty excited about such a range on 20 gals

the Duke 4850 weighs a bit under 100 pounds, sells for about $5500 and was designed specifically for continuous duty as well as standby battery charging...

Subject: [Electric Boats] Westsail 32 conversion.

I have been lurking on this list for a long time now, and am finally ready to give up on the poor old Volvo...

My boat is a westsail 32

32 feet long
20000 lbs displacement.

I am hoping to get a range of 20 or 30 nm, at 4 or 5 kts.

I should also want to be able to hit my hull speed of 6 or 7.5 kts for 10 min or so to get over a bar or out of the way of a ship.

I am thinking of a 48 volt system.

Eventually I would like to do a diesel genset installation, but probably a honda 2000 generator for the time being.

I have heard the figure of 1kw per ton of displacement, does it seam like the 10.5 kit from thunderstruck motors would be sufficient?

most likely I would get their gear reduction:

Is any one using ME 0913 on a boat as heavy as mine?

I am thinking of going with AGM type batterys.

how big a battery back do you recommend?

Thank you for your time.... (and encouragement?)

Anton
