Re: [Electric Boats] marine grade 48Volt charger

Bradley:

Yes the Zivan can do a complete charge cycle but, can not check each battery's voltage to keep them in balance. That's why I also have the Dual Pro 4 on board as a backup for charging but, also because it is basically four separate chargers it balances the batteries for the final stage of charging. There is no complicated switching involved. Since I am rarely at a dock I use a Honda 2000 generator for charging when I arrive at anchor. I use it with the Zivan to go through the bulk phase of charging when it switches to the absorption stage I know it by the sound of the generator (or the flashing yellow LED light on the Zivan). I then unplug the Zivan and then plug in the Dual Pro to finish the battery charging and balance the batteries.  The Zivan NG-1 has internal fuses so there was no need to have an external fuse.

Mike,

Thanks for the note. Interesting. Can't the Zivan NG1 do the finishing/top-off/maintenance phases? Also, I'm curious, how do you switch between the two battery chargers? Have you made some kind of automated switching (based on the NG1 output jumpers?) or do you switch manually. Finally with the NG1 where did you fuse it? Thanks for the information in advance. It is much appreciated. A great forum!

Of course it's mounted high and in area where it won't get wet and if it does I probably have other things to worry about.:)  Just yesterday I ran it full out from about 9 AM to 7 PM  while operating in hybrid mode with the Honda 2000 generator while on my current cruise. Then  I got to the mooring ran it another three hours to recharge the 48 volt battery bank through the bulk charge cycle. It's proven it's self to me but, yes you do need to keep it out of the weather.

I will also use it primarily when at a dock with AC power  to do a complete charge. But, I'm not at a dock that often. So usually it's the Zivan and Dual Pro in combination as I have described.

I had the Zivan NG-1 but unfortunately it is just not capable of being used very well in a marine environment as far as I'm concerned. it's a great charger but I have to take it out of the boat after each charge and sail. I believe I'd prefer a single bank 48 volt charger instead of a 4 bank charger 12V charger but am open to conversion with reasonable argument. Does anyone have a good or great suggestion on this front?
